Brief History of Shyambazar Friends Union Club Durgotsav:

Establishment & Age: Shyambazar Friends Union Club Durgotsav is organised by Shyambazar Friends Union Puja Committee and was established in 1972, according to the committee’s public page. In 2026, it is celebrating its 55th year. It began as a neighbourhood celebration and has developed into a recognised theme puja on the North Kolkata circuit.

Themes:

• 2025 – “Local and Global Aesthetics”: The pandal juxtaposed global architectural icons, including replicas of the Burj Khalifa and Palm Jumeirah, with dramatic gold-and-neon lighting.
• 2024 – “Mystery Land Under the Water” (Aquatic theme): The theme used an underwater or aquatic world concept, combining aquatic imagery, mystery and immersive pandal design to connect visitors with water and nature.
• 2023 – “Digbaji” (“Somersault”): The entire pandal appeared to be turned upside down. Furniture and even a refrigerator were suspended from the ceiling, while bamboo installations reinforced the visual idea of a topsy-turvy world.
