Sikdar Bagan Sadharan Durgotsav
Brief History of Sikdar Bagan Sadharan Durgotsav:
Establishment & Age: Sikdar Bagan Sadharan Durgotsav is one of Kolkata’s oldest community (barowari/sarbojanin) Durga Pujas. It was established in 1913; in 2026, it is celebrating its 114th year.
The puja is organised by the Sikdar Bagan Sadharan Durgotsov Committee and is held in the Hatibagan–Shyambazar area of North Kolkata.
Location: 1, Sikdar Bagan Street, Near Town School, Hatibagan, Kolkata- 700004, North Kolkata
Themes:
- 2025 – “Sanket” (“Signal / Omen”): The theme focused on nature’s fury and environmental destruction-floods, cyclones, climate change and used the pandal to ask what these disasters are signalling to humanity.
- 2024 – “Manobotar Utshob” (“Festival of Humanity”): Amid global conflict and terrorism, the pandal carried a message of peace, showing a calm, earthen Durga as a symbol of harmony in a violent world.
- 2023 – “Mélange of Traditions”: The concept celebrated the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Bengal over centuries, blending different artistic and cultural strands in the pandal and idol.
- Over the last decade, the committee has increasingly used social and environmental messages alongside its traditional idol-focused presentation.
USP:
- Century-old barowari tradition: As one of Kolkata’s oldest continuously running sarbojanin pujas (since 1913), it carries strong historical value and a sense of continuity.
- Idol-centric artistry: The major attraction remains the Durga pratima itself; the samity devotes significant skill and creativity to the sculpture and styling of the goddess each year.
- Spiritual, cultural ambience: Despite space constraints in a dense North Kolkata neighbourhood, the puja maintains a deeply spiritual and culturally rich atmosphere.
- Socially relevant themes: Recent editions have addressed peace, humanity and environmental crisis, showing the puja’s willingness to engage with contemporary issues.
- Accessible heritage stop: Its location near Shyambazar makes it easy to include in a North Kolkata heritage and pandal-hopping route.
In Summary:
Sikdar Bagan Sadharan Durgotsav, started in 1913 and now in its 114th year, is a historic Hatibagan–Shyambazar community puja in North Kolkata. Its USP lies in its century-old barowari legacy, idol-focused artistry and spiritual ambience, combined in recent years with socially and environmentally conscious themes such as “Sanket” (2025) and “Manobotar Utshob” (2024).
