Brief history of Santoshpur Avenue South Durga Puja:

Establishment & Age: Santoshpur Avenue South Durga Puja (officially Santoshpur Avenue South Pally Mangal Samity) is a community Durga Puja in the Santoshpur area of South Kolkata. It began in the 1967 and in 2026, it is celebrating its 59th year.

The puja is organised by Santoshpur Avenue South Club / Pally Mangal Samity and is held near the Avenue South–Santoshpur Avenue crossing (Battala More).

Location: 23, Avenue South Road, Bidhan Colony, Santoshpur, Kolkata- 700075, South Kolkata

Themes:

  • 2023 – Natural elements as universal mother: The theme depicted the natural elements of the world (earth, water, fire, air, etc.) as manifestations of the universal mother, presenting an ecological and spiritual vision of the goddess.
  • 2014 – “Aei Bodhanei Amar Mukti”: The concept explored liberation through the awakening (bodhan) of consciousness, using symbolic installations and visual storytelling.
  • 2007 – “Nabarasa”: The pandal was based on the classical idea of Nava Rasa (nine emotions) from Bharata Muni’s Natyashastra, translating aesthetic theory into a Durga Puja environment.
  • Earlier themes: The puja has also drawn on Jibanananda Das’s “Rupasi Bangla”, solar energy and other conceptual subjects, showing a consistent interest in literature, nature and ideas.

USP:

  • Idea-driven, literary and ecological themes: Strong focus on concepts from poetry, classical aesthetics and environmental thought rather than purely decorative spectacle.
  • “True Spirit” standards: The puja has been highlighted for good safety and civic practices – solar streetlights, ambulance on standby, clean toilets and first-aid kits – scoring well in “True Spirit” evaluations.
  • Santoshpur community anchor: A long-standing neighbourhood puja for Avenue South and surrounding blocks, with steady local participation.
  • Accessible South Kolkata stop: Its location on a main Santoshpur road makes it easy to combine with nearby pujas such as Santoshpur Trikon Park and Santoshpur Lake Pally.

In Summary:

Santoshpur Avenue South Durga Puja, started in the year 1967 and now celebrating 59th year, is a Santoshpur community puja on Avenue South near Battala More. Its USP lies in concept-rich themes – such as natural elements as the universal mother (2023), “Nabarasa” (2007) and “Aei Bodhanei Amar Mukti” (2014) – combined with strong safety and civic practices, making it a thoughtful and well-organised stop on the Santoshpur–Jadavpur Durga Puja circuit.
