Brief history of Beniatola Sarbojanin Durgotsav:

Establishment & Age: Beniatola Sarbojanin Durgotsav, organised by Sovabazar Beniatola Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity, began in 1947. In 2026, it is celebrating its 80th year.

Location: 67, Beniatola Street, Sovabazar, near B.K. Paul Avenue crossing, Kolkata- 700005, North Kolkata.

Themes:

  • 2025 – Tribute to Uttam Kumar: The pandal celebrated the centenary of Bengali cinema’s “Mahanayak” Uttam Kumar, using references to his films, screen persona and contribution to Bengali popular culture.
  • 2022 – “Adir Ahwan” (“The Primordial Call”): The theme looked back at traditional bonedi heritage and older forms of Durga worship while presenting them through a contemporary public-puja format.
  • 2022–23 – Ashtadhatu Durga: A major attraction was an approximately 11-foot idol made of ashtadhatu, weighing more than 1,000 kg. The committee described it as the heaviest such Durga idol at the time.

USP:

  • Permanent temple setting: Unlike a purely temporary theme pandal, the puja has a permanent Durga temple, giving it a distinctive year-round religious identity.
  • Heritage-oriented presentation: Its themes often connect contemporary storytelling with North Kolkata’s older culture, rituals and bonedi traditions.
  • Exceptional idol craftsmanship: The giant ashtadhatu idol was an unusual technical and artistic achievement and became one of the puja’s strongest attractions.
  • Cinema and cultural memory: The Uttam Kumar tribute showed the committee’s ability to use Bengali popular culture as a devotional and public-art subject.
  • North Kolkata heritage circuit: Its location places it close to Sovabazar Rajbari, Ahiritola, Kumartuli and other historic pujas, making it a natural stop on a heritage-focused pandal route.

In Summary:

Beniatola Sarbojanin Durgotsav, founded in 1947 and now in its 80th year, is a heritage-rooted North Kolkata puja distinguished by its permanent temple, traditional atmosphere, large-scale idols and themes linked to Bengal’s cultural memory.
